Is fly-fishing an art form? That question was top of mind when sitting down to talk with Alberto Rey. As an accomplished artist and professor, Alberto was the perfect person to talk about this topic because he’s also a fly-fishing guide. Listen in as we discuss Alberto’s unique fishing life, having immigrated to the U.S. from Cuba and finding a love of fishing only to go back to Cuba on a fishing trip. He also discusses his many other projects such as taking young people fishing, traveling to Nepal and much more.

Writer’s Eye 2022 Spotlight Talk: Alberto Rey’s “Biological Regionalism: Bonefish, Jardines de la Reina, Cuba” Join UVA educators for information and guided observation of Alberto Rey’s “Biological Regionalism: Bonefish, Jardines de la Reina, Cuba” in this Writer’s Eye 2022 Spotlight Talk created for The Fralin Museum of Art’s 36th annual ekphrastic writing program. Alberto Rey (b. 1960) is an artist who carefully considers nature’s role in our culture. In this painting. Rey takes us underwater in the vibrant ecosystem of Jardines de la Reina off the southern coast of Cuba where we encounter a bonefish, a beady-eyed fish native to Cuba. Rey’s choice of style and content speaks to his identity as an avid fly-fisherman and a Cuban-American. By placing viewers within the fish’s habitat, Rey hopes to make us aware of society’s growing disconnection from the natural world. This intimate portrayal of a single fish intensifies our connection to nature and makes us aware of wildlife we might not otherwise encounter.
